New York City – Today was a day of wandering around. John and I headed down to the Saturday Greenmarket at Union Square so he could do his weekly restock. For those who’ve never been, Union Square is a mediocre park located in the center of town, bordered by the various parts of Greenwich Village, Gramercy Park, and Chelsea. It has been home, over the years, to many protests, concerts, and a wide variety of other things. The one constant, for many years, has been the Greenmarket – Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, the latter being the biggie. There are also other branches of the Greenmarket that pop up in various other parks around the city, but this is the heart. The Greenmarket itself, is an organization of farmers and producers from New York and New Jersey. A variety of cooperation, coordination, and probably a touch of coercion, decides who brings what to the market each week. A large percentage of the produce is organic.
The rest of the day was spent visiting with my friend Anthony, in from Galveston, Texas, for a friend’s wedding. We popped out and had a little brunch, wandered around shopping, and stopped in at The Pink Tea Cup for slabs of the best sweet potato pie in the city and some refreshing iced tea. The evening remains to be seen…
And speaking of seen, I’m just going to present a half dozen photos from our wanderings in the Greenmarket – just a little fruit and vegetable porn.
