Monday was May 25th, the anniversary of the revolution that, at least officially, began the fight for Argentine independence. And hey, while the country may have an Independence Day, July 9th, any excuse for another day off and festival, you know? The streets near to the central Plaza de Mayo were jammed with people and stands – anyone who could figure out how to jury-rig a grill was offering up “Choris!”, “Patys!”, or “Bondi!” (respectively, chorizo sandwiches, mostly grilled, though a very few offering “Pomarola!” – chorizos simmered slowly in a mix of peppers, onions and tomatoes, hamburgers, and pork shoulder). There were also scattered cries of “Fritos!”, which is apparently shorthand at fairs for fried empanadas – a sort of treat, I guess, since most Argentine empanadas tend to be baked.
And yes, yes I did sample away – a bondiola, a chori a la pomorola, and an empanada!
